Post-Fire Updates

Bob Thompson Peak Trail (page 53)
From the saddle at the ridgeline [above Morgan Mine] to the summit of the peak, the path is very difficult to follow and is over loose gravel along a very steep mountain face. I would not call it passable. We had to move hugging the ground and using all hands and feet. There were some moments when I was genuinely afraid we would slide down the mountain. [Report received via e-mail.]

Carr Canyon Road is very rough, especially near the top. Suggest only SUV-type vehicles make the trip.

Cave Canyon Road is also becoming difficult.

Corrections for Trails of the Huachucas

  • Page 61, the 1988 Peaks Fire burned 12,000 acres; 3,700 of which was in Coronado National Memorial.
  • Page 107 has a cut-off sentence, it should read "I have never walked this part, but have driven it in a four-wheel drive."
  • Page 110, map should be labeled 24, not 23.
  • Page 115, elevation difference for Lakeshore Trail is 0', not 5,400'.

Miller Canyon History
About 1904 the steam boiler, metal arrastra, and shaker table were installed by the Huachuca Consolidated Development Company, managed by Joseph Palmerlee. The company worked several claims along the crest of the Huachucas. Max Baumkirchner may have operated the equipment in later years.
